That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Guardsman Vent Sanitizing: The Sacramento Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Guardsman-compatible vent sanitizing components across Sacramento, with most replacements running $145 – $285 installed, parts and labor included. If you’re noticing a weak or intermittent sanitizer output, or the indicator light on your Guardsman unit has gone dark, that’s usually the first sign the sanitizing element has reached the end of its service life. Most owners discover the problem the same way: a faint musty note returning to the supply air even though the HVAC filter is fresh, or the little green LED that used to glow steadily now flickers or won’t come on at all.

In Sacramento’s warm, low-humidity summers, dust moves through ductwork differently than it does in coastal California. We see settle-out patterns in the branch runs, and a Guardsman sanitizer that used to keep supply-side registers clean will simply stop keeping up. We tell you what we’ll do, we tell you what it costs, and then we do the work.

Which Guardsman Models This Applies To

Guardsman’s vent sanitizing line splits into two families: the in-duct UV sanitizers (sold under the Guardsman AirShield and PureDuct series) and the plate-type photocatalytic oxidizers (the Guardsman PCO line). They are not interchangeable. The UV units use a 14-inch or 17-inch lamp that mounts into the supply plenum or a main trunk line, while the PCO units install at the register or grille face and rely on a honeycomb catalyst substrate that wears out over time.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see regularly in Sacramento: Guardsman changed lamp pin spacing on their AirShield series in 2019. Units manufactured before that take a 4-pin lamp with 11mm spacing; newer ones take a 4-pin lamp with 13mm spacing. The lamps look nearly identical side by side. If you’re sourcing a replacement yourself, measure the pin spread with a ruler before ordering. We keep both lamp variants on the truck, so we don’t have to guess.

OEM Guardsman parts are solid, but the genuine lamp carries a meaningful price premium. For the UV series, we’ve had good results with the quality aftermarket lamps from Nikro, which hold the same output curve and warranty at a lower installed cost. For the PCO catalyst plates, we recommend staying with genuine Guardsman. The aftermarket plates we’ve tested degrade faster, especially in Sacramento’s dry summers when the system runs longer cycles.

We’re an independent Sacramento service provider, not a Guardsman dealer or affiliate. That means we recommend what actually holds up in local homes, not what a brand rep pushes. We also carry replacement parts for Lennox, Trane, and Carrier systems, so if your Guardsman unit shares a plenum with one of those air handlers, we can address both in a single visit.

Signs Your Guardsman Vent Sanitizing Is Failing

  • The indicator light flickers or is completely dark. The ballast in the UV series is usually the first electronic component to fail. We see this most often in Sacramento homes with older panels or voltage fluctuations; the ballast protects the lamp but sacrifices itself in the process.
  • You catch the faint smell of stale air near supply registers. When the sanitizing element stops producing, the air coming off the coil loses that neutral, “just cleaned” quality. This takes a couple of weeks to become noticeable, and most people notice it in the bedroom or hallway before anywhere else.
  • The lamp or catalyst plate looks coated with a hazy film. Fine dust bonds to the lamp surface and blocks the UV output. In Sacramento, where summer air carries fine particulate from the Central Valley, we see films form if the upstream filter wasn’t doing its job.
  • The unit hums but doesn’t produce sanitizing output. A humming ballast with a cold lamp usually means the lamp filament has failed. The PCO series hums less often, but when the fan bearing wears on a register-mount unit, it thins out the buzz to a whisper.
  • Your system runs, but the PCO plate looks cracked or bleached. The titanium dioxide coating on PCO catalysts fails by flaking, not by dimming. Once you see pale patches, the substrate is spent. We replace, not resurface.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Sacramento homes, a Guardsman vent sanitizing replacement typically lands between $145 and $285 installed. The low end covers a single AirShield UV lamp swap done during an already-scheduled service visit. The high end covers a full PCO catalyst plate replacement plus the labor to remove, fit, and reseal the housing. The most common job we do, a single 14-inch UV lamp with ballast replacement, runs around $190 – $240.

Every quote includes the part, the removal of the failed component, installation of the new one, a quick inspection of the surrounding ductwork, and a written price before we open the toolbox. No per-item surprise at the end. The work is covered by Morton’s 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the sanitizer doesn’t perform as it should within a year, we make it right. That’s the whole promise, and it’s stamped on every job, not offered as an add-on.

Service Typical Sacramento Installed Price
Guardsman AirShield 14″ UV lamp replacement $145 – $195
Guardsman AirShield 17″ UV lamp replacement $175 – $225
Guardsman UV ballast replacement (lamp included) $190 – $240
Guardsman PCO catalyst plate replacement $210 – $285

What drives the range: the specific Guardsman series you own, whether it’s a lamp-only swap or a ballast replacement, and whether your plenum access is easy or tight. We’ll know which after we ask a few questions on the phone and, in most cases, send a photo request so we can see the unit before we arrive.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one thing every owner should check before calling us: whether the unit is receiving power. A tripped breaker or a switch flipped off during a filter change accounts for a surprising number of “dead” sanitizers, and that costs you nothing to fix. You can also visually inspect the lamp for cracks or darkness without touching anything. That part is safe.

What’s not safe is working inside the supply plenum near the coil. A UV lamp operates at high intensity and can damage your eyes in seconds of direct exposure. The ballast holds a charge. And if your Guardsman unit is wired into the air handler, you’re working near line voltage. This is one place where a careful technician is worth the call. Paul and the crew do this all year in Sacramento, and half the job is just being methodical about disconnecting the old component before touching anything else.

If you’ve checked the breaker and the switch and the light is still dark, call (279) 239-4171. We’ll quote the replacement over the phone and send a technician with the right lamp already on the truck.
